What is racism in teaching and teaching? Racism is structural, it must be structurally deconstructed. Since anyone can think and act racially, we must constantly think about it, reflect and act actively. We absorb racism with breast milk, which is why we are influenced by it and need to deconstruct it. As a teacher, trainer, lecturer, you remember the content you taught, where you searched for, read and recommended authors. How many of them are black and/or PoC in total? Now look at your classroom, your team, how many blacks and/or PoC are part of it? Are you asking yourself the question of representation? When did you realize that you white are? Have you ever been asked if you speak European? What was the reason why you had to take a German test even though you had already taken one?
The aim of the workshop is to know and understand the effects of the power of language and one's own privileges. It should also trigger self-reflection critical of racism. It is about questioning and reflecting on your own positioning and taking active action. Critical whiteness should be lived. The workshop offers practical exercises from everyday experiences and situations. These exercises are suggested by the management or constructed from the participants' experiences and reflections.
Discussions are conducted on the basis of selected texts from the fields of social sciences, teaching and history, which illustrate specific situations. Many people do not consider themselves racist and may discover prejudices during the workshop that they were not aware of; this is a move that can cause discomfort and even upheaval. That is why emphasis is placed on creating a sense of security and care throughout the workshop.
